Cholera vaccine
Oral – to drink
Target group:
Cholera vaccine is primarily recommended for relief workers traveling to disaster areas, but can also be considered for longer stays in developing countries in primitive conditions. For ordinary tourists, the risk of contracting cholera is very low.
Vaccination dose:
Cholera vaccination consists of 2 doses for adults and children from 6 years of age. Children aged 2 through 5 years should receive 3 doses.
The doses are given at intervals of at least 1 week.
Protection duration:
The duration of protection depends on age and the number of doses given in the basic vaccination. For continuous protection against cholera, a single booster dose is recommended within 2 years for adults and children aged 6 years and older, and within 6 months for children aged 2 to under 6 years. If more than 2 years have passed since the last vaccination (more than 6 months for children aged 2 to under 6 years), the primary course should be repeated.
